New Zealand Government Congratulates New Prime Minister of Kingdom of Tonga

New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs Nanaia Mahuta has congratulated the Kingdom of Tonga’s newly appointed Prime Minister Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni on his appointment.

An all-male parliament was elected in the 2021 Tonga general elections.

Minister Mahuta says, “Aotearoa New Zealand and Tonga have an enduring bond and the Kingdom is one of our closest neighbours in the Pacific. We look forward to working with Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni and the new Cabinet in the spirit of partnership.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also acknowledged outgoing Prime Minister Hon Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa and his contribution to Tonga.

Tonga’s new parliamentary session for 2022 is set to be opened by King Tupou VI, to January 11.
